5 Halloween outfits you can make for £5 and under
It’s time to flash the cash and spend your hard earned coins on the most ridiculous night of the year, Halloween.
Welcome back to our money-saving series, this time we’ve stepped up the stakes to a fiver. Don’t want to break the bank? We’ve got a whole series of £5 Halloween outfits here.
Bin Bag Witch
We’re getting the bin bags out again for this handy, last minute costume.
Method: Take your trusty roll of bin bags and take one off – this is going to be the main body of your dress. Turn it upside down so that the opening is at the bottom, find the middle and bunch it up – this is where you’re going to be cutting your neck hole. The bigger the cut, the lower the neckline, so it’s best to start smaller and work your way up.
Once you’ve done that, you can officially put your dress on, except it has no armholes. That’s easily rectified, just make a note of where they go and repeat the first process for them. If you want, you can leave the dress like it is, if you want to be a fancy witch, you can cut the bottom of the bag in shred like strips – sassy.
Next up, you need to make your cape. After all, a witch isn’t complete without one of them. Take another bag off the roll and tie the handles together, leaving room for your noggin. This is all you need for your cape, it’ll be aerodynamic when you’re flying through the air on your broomstick. For a bit of added glamour, feel free to go ham with the glitter on your cape.
WHAT IS A WITCH WITHOUT A HAT? A fraud. To make this you’ll need some black card, grab a sheet and roll it into a cone shape then cut off any excess so the bottom is level, secure with glue. Next, go around the bottom of the cone and cut 1cm cuts all around the bottom of the hat, this is to help attach the brim.
Speaking of the brim, it’s time to make that. Bend each of the tabs back on themselves and place the cone on top of another piece of black card. Draw around the bottom to make sure the brim is the right size to fit around it. Draw a wider circle around the original circle and cut it out. To attach it just slot it over the top of the cone and use glue to stick the tabs to the brim. Decorate your hat with whatever the hell you want.
Complete the outfit by covering your face in green face paint, who doesn’t want to look like a walking pea.
Cost of costume: £0.70 bin bags
£1.00 glitter
£1.00 glue
£1.25 black card
£1.00 green face paint
Pumpkin
They’re not just good when you’re being basic with your coffee. Live a little and dress up as one too.
Method: If you need a costume in a hurry, this is a good shout. You’ll need to acquire an orange t-shirt, how you do that is up to you. Once you have it, lay it out flat onto the table and take your permanent marker. Here you’ll be able to design your ‘Jack O’Lantern’ cut out, whether you go for something traditional, cute or the scariest thoughts in your brain, you’re free to let your imagination run wild.
Next, take your orange face paint and put it liberally onto, you guessed it, your face. You want to channel your inner Wotsit, so make sure it’s vibrant. For added effect, get this all over your arms or any skin that you’re going to have on show – after all, are you human or are you pumpkin?
Once your pumpkin-ified t-shirt and face paint is on, complete the look by pushing a pillow or cushion up your shirt. You’ll be making heads turn all night.
Cost of costume: £2.15 Orange t-shirt
£1.00 Orange face paint
£1.00 Black permanent marker
404 Error
Because it’s 2018 and if you want to go as a website error, you sure as hell can.
Method: For this outfit, you’ll need a grand total of 2 items. A white t-shirt and a black permanent marker. Lay your t-shirt down on a flat surface and take your black pen. This is where the magic really happens, write the phrase, ‘404 Error: Outfit Not Found’. BAM, you’re that witty, unique friend who just made an outfit in 2 seconds flat. Just don’t tell anyone else or you won’t be unique anymore.
Cost of costume: £1.00 Black permanent marker
£1.58 White t-shirt
Duct tape skeleton
The beauty of this outfit is that you’re bound to have some black trousers or leggings and a long sleeved top hidden in the depths of your wardrobe.
Method: Lay your clothing onto a flat surface, cut a long strip of duct tape and stick in the middle of the shirt – this is going to be the spine. Cut two strips for each leg, leaving a gap at the knee, your thigh bone is connected to your… well, knee bone in this case.
Cut two strips for each arm, don’t forget to leave a gap at the elbow. We don’t know much about biology, but that isn’t one long bone.
Next, cut shorter strips for ribs and cut them in half lengthways to make thinner strips. Stick these on either side of your spine.
For the hip bone, lay two strips of duct tape together to make them double the width. Use scissors to cut the top corners off and making an inverted V on the bottom edge. Stick this on the t-shirt if it’s long and worn untucked, otherwise stick it to your trousers/leggings.
After you’re finished, just remove the duct tape and you’ve got your original clothing back in one piece, which is more than we can say for some of these outfits.
Cost of costume: £2.99 White duct tape
A mouse, duh
Embrace your inner Karen with one of the most iconic Halloween outfits.
Method: Place your grey felt on a flat surface, draw around a glass, then move it down 2cms parallel and draw around it again – connect the two circles together. You need to cut this out as one piece, no one wants half an ear hun. Eat, sleep, repeat the above process.
Wrap the grey felt around your headband, remember that 2cm strip between circles? That’s what you’re going to use to glue the ears to your headband, clever huh? Répéter with your other ear.
Cut out two equal sized pieces of pink felt, these are going to be the inside of your mouse ear. Glue them on to your grey ears. You can leave your mouse outfit as that because honestly, everyone knows that’s a mouse.
Cost of costume: £1.59 Plastic headband
£0.99 Grey and pink felt
£1.00 Glue
Now you’ve saved all that money on your Halloween costume, it’s time to treat yourself. You know what’s coming next.
