The Courteeners blow fans away on the Main Stage

Frontman Liam Fray strolled on stage in a coat and sunglasses, looking effortlessly cool as he strummed his guitar and melted the crowd in his hands.

‘Cavorting’ was next and the crowd went mental, loving the tunes from their classic album ‘St Jude’ which celebrated its tenth anniversary earlier this year. The love for the band clearly hasn’t dwindled over the last decade, as the crowds kept growing and everyone watching screamed the lyrics back to Liam as loud as they could.

Even newer tracks like ‘No-one Will Ever Replace Us’ had fans cheering and dancing, mesmerised by the band and their incredible stage presence. The raw, indie sound that the Manchester favourites started out with all those years ago blared through the speakers, proving why they’ve only gone from strength to strength as time’s gone on.

‘Take Over the World’ is almost what The Courteeners have done, and the crowd today proved it. The band even played some of their lesser-known tracks like ‘Small Bones’ but the fans were singing their hearts out no less.

When they played huge hit ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ the crowd went wild — singing, clapping and jumping like crazy. When he said his famous line ‘every single one yas’, the fans totally lost it and the crowd was completely full of moving bodies having the time of their lives.

The set ended with ‘What Took You So Long?’ and the crowd sang in unison with Liam, cheering and clapping louder than the music coming from the stage.

It’s safe to say that The Courteeners aren’t going anywhere for a long time yet.

Frontman Justin Hayward-Young’s rapid recital of poignant lyrics was majestic as he looked out wild-eyed upon the crowd before him.

High-octane throughout, the band went back to “the archives” with fan favourites such as ‘Post Break-Up Sex’ and ‘If You Wanna’. Mixed in with the classics, new track ‘Your Love Is My Favourite Band’ was a real highlight and a throwback to that polished 70s and 80s rock they were hoping to emulate on their new record — undoubtedly one of this year’s hottest albums.

What did we expect from The Vaccines? A dose of up-beat, guitar-driven anthems to get every Indie Cindy up and dancing. What were we treated to? Well, that, and a real coming-of-age performance that further engrained their status as one of the UK’s best indie rock bands (like we didn’t know that already!).

Their soaring sound delivered through an ethereal haze of smoke was, as ever, a throwback to 90s Mancunian maestros Oasis and The Stone Roses.

Lead singer Tommy O’Dell has one of the best set of pipes in the business, able to harness all manner of emotions in his vocals. This vocal prowess was demonstrated with a glorious rendition of stripped-back hit ‘Delete’ as well as ‘Lay Down’ and timeless ballad ‘In The Air’. Nobody has made Burberry baseball caps look so cool!

A wailing of lyrics from the crowd was ever-present, resonating in the acoustics of a chock-a-block tent. One couldn’t help but acknowledge these were serious summer soundtracks loved by all. Even for more up-beat tracks such as ‘Feels Like 37’, DMA’s were equally as impressive and the crowd responsive. They were really ‘let[ting] it all out’.

DMA’s continue to be one of the hottest bands coming out of an incredible time in Australian music.
